Nancy Catherine Ballenger (Richey)

Nancy Catherine Ballenger was born 1871 in Bosque County, Texas, to Thomas Wood Ballenger and Barbara Anderson. It is thought that Nancy's mother Barbara died in childbirth (she is buried in Oswald Cemetery, Clifton).1 It is likely that soon after Nancy went to live with her mother's older sister, Catherine Archibald.2 The fostering of young children to the nearest maternal relative was quite common through the turn of the century. Raising a child was a full time occupation, and would leave no time for the difficult manual labor required for Thomas to work the farm.

In 1877 Nancy's father Thomas was remarried to Mary Melindie Ann Adams in Johnson County Texas.3 There is no record of her rejoining her father. In spite of Nancy being sent away from her father at an early age, Nancy and Thomas remained in contact throughout their lives. Mary Ethel Ballenger Fristad recalled meeting her "Aunt Nancy" on many occasions during her childhood.

Nancy was married to John Franklin Richey in Texas prior to 1892; they had eight children. At some point the family moved to California.

Nancy died in Riverside California on 28 October 1946 at the age of 75.4
